Any form of art is cradled in and nurtured by the actualities of human experience, social and private. Whatever the Aesthetes say in favour of the autonomy of art, by flaunting the slogan ‗Art for Art's Sake', no amount of abstraction can sever art and literature from their roots in real life – life lived as a throbbing interweave of joy and sorrow, dream and actuality, hope and despair. In other words, his understanding of God and Christianity is presented in a controversial way in some of the analysed poems in this thesis. Therefore, this representation somehow contrasts with Blake’s own religious outlook. More clearly, the concepts of God and Christianity are represented through different means in different poems. The data obtained as a result of the analyses proves that Blake does not show a consistent representation of God and Christianity in Songs of Innocence and of Experience. The selected poems have been analysed thematically. Then, 15 selected poems that are relevant to each other in terms of religion are analysed in detail.
